Following an initiative by Ronald Prentice, a long time Delius Society member, to encourage the music of Delius in Somerset, the Taunton branch was formed. On hearing of the new group, the ailing Chairman of the South West branch in Bristol, Alice Jones, suggested that the new branch should take over the work of the S.W. branch and this was readily agreed to. The newly amalgamated groups were renamed the West of England Branch. |

The new branch's first Chairman, Ronald Prentice, was a professional double bass player and violin maker until his recent retirement. Taunton has a lively record of Delius performances led by conductors, Brian Cresswell with the Somerset Opera and Somerset County Orchestra including the Mass of Life, Sea Drift, Appalachia, Brigg Fair and the Songs of Farewell, and David Hedges, also with the SCO, in performances of On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring , Summer Night on the River and the Cello Concerto. The branch attracts members from a wide area, from Cheltenham to Exeter and Sidmouth to Crediton. Since its inaugural pictures in September 98 we have had a lively programme of picturess, which included a talk on "My Life with Fred" by George Little, an illustrated talk on "Delius' little Red Book" by Roger Buckley, and live music picturess such as a recital at Christopher and Dawn Redwood's house, featuring songs sung by Christopher Redwood accompanied by Robert Threlfall,a chamber music concert with a string quartet, piano, harpsichord, flute and oboe, and a full symphony orchestra rehearsing and playing through "North Country Sketches". A very warm welcome is offered to members of other branches who happen to be in the area and also to non members who wish to join the West of England branch at any of its picturess. |
